Magic Eight Ball

Review: At present this band has a rolling line-up of fellow musicians and friends of lead singer Baz FRANCIS (lovechild of David BOWIE and Rick (Rik Mayall) from the The Young Ones. Sometimes including Andy COPPER and Michael GATES. Its great to find a frontman who's not afriad to be upfront. He seems to love nothing more than striding off the stage (when possible) and  striking a pose, with his guitar, while effortlessly playing a wicked riff. Baz is also in sole charge of songwriting for the band. In his material I can hear strong echoes of the aforementioned Bowie, Guns N Roses, Queen, with a little dash of early Genesis. They demonstrate how rock should flow, taking the listener on a musical journey down river.

Magic Ship

Review: This 4-piece band from Twickenham has Colin Gillman (vocals and guitar), Sam Day (guitar and vocals), Adam Donovan (bass guitar), and Dave Lombardi (drums and percussion). They play classic rock with a twist of Americana, but performed with an English accent. The band name comes from the title of a song by 60s band Free. Starting out as just a few guys having fun playing at the rehearsal studios on a Monday night (instead of going down the pub), its now become a lot more serious. They have recently released their debut album "LoveTel Motel" on the Stone Island Record label and available at gigs.

Magnum

Review: Not to be confused with the world famous heavy rock band of the same name, this is one of the best local charity big bands. It features Alan Burchett (lead guitar and vocals), Mike Milne (rhythm guitar and vocals), Tony Allwood (rhythm guitar and percussion), Richard Walker (bass guitar), Bernie Hunt (saxophone), Bill McDonough (saxophone), and Noel Gurney (drums and vocals). They play tracks by Chuck Berry, Robert Palmer.

Mays, The

Review: This Farnborough-based band of fresh-faced youngsters already have the ability to really wow the audience.  Featuring Buddy on bass guitar and lead vocals, assisted by Lucy on vocals and tambourine, Cass (lead guitar / backing vocals), Nathan (rhythm guitar / backing vocals) and Phil (drums and percussion). They currently have a limited but well chosen set list from the 50s-00s including famous but often forgotten tracks by artists such as Beatles, The : BERRY, Chuck : Dire Straits : Duffy : Kings of Leon : Queen : Rolling Stones : Status Quo.

They already have a wealth of experience beyond their years, having played in pubs, clubs, private parties and functions, and even in front of 11,000 people in Aldershot.

Never Odd Or Even

Review: This 4-piece folk-rock band, were previously called FUBAR, a trendy acronym familiar to many gig-goers that feel a bit rough in the morning. It stands for "F#*ked Up Beyond All Recognition". Their clever wordplay continues with this palindrome. The line-up stays the same with Tiz (lead vocals & guitar), Nick Butcher (bass guitar & vocals), Alex Rutherford (guitar & backing vocals), Jon Taylor (drums & percussion). They write and perform their own songs, including "Don't be so paranoid", "Down to the river", "Powerlines", and "She won't listen to me". The also have a CD available "So Many Dynamos".

New Ambassadors, The

Review: This 5-piece band features the powerhouse of CLEAVER, Ashley on lead vocals, often found leaping around the stage, firing the crowd up. That is except for the couple of songs on which he plays keyborads. Geoff (guitar), DAWSON, Jon (guitar), Dan (bass guitar), with JAMES, Phil on drums and percussion. Phil started the band with a desire to find great rock anthems usually overlooked by other covers bands, as well as a few ballads. Review: This rock band consists of Paul Swindells (aka Mush) on lead guitar and vocals, Ewan (guitar), Sam (bass guitar), and Dave Poste (Drums and percussion). Rainmaker

Review: The female lead singer, Candy Harris, has a Janis Joplin quality to her singing. The band also has Stevie Baber (Guitar and backing vocals), Dave Shepherd (bass guitar and vocals), and Glenn Brickwood (drums). One of the guitarists wears a top hat, and the other a cowboy hat. They play covers of rock classics and some newer disco anthems by artists such as Bon Jovi, Cameo, Deep Purple, Dylan, Guns n Roses, Led Zeppelin, Meredith Brooks, Primal Scream, Steppenwolf, KT Tunstall, and U2. Simon Hall who used to play guitar has now retired, he didn't look that old to me.

Review: This band IS by far one of the most talented and lively to be found playing in a local pub, and features the energetic and powerful voice of Carl Chapman (formerly of The Flyovers and The Pirates) with his harmonica, Ian Winter (Guitar), Jon Harvey (Guitar/Saxophone), Pete Emmings (bass guitar), John Cutt (Drums and percussion). Their set doesn't contain the same old playlist tracks that everyone else plays, and includes covers by Dr Feelgood, George Thorogood, Troup.

Rik Martin Trio, The

Review: The first real surprise about this band is that it has four members, though only three perform at once, Rik Martin (lead vocals and guitar), Helen Watt (Drums and percussion), and sharing the duties on bass guitar is Dave Wheeler and Alan O'Connor. They play an eclectic mix of electric and acoustic blues / funk / rock originals and covers.
